A little iconic New Zealand advertising

The following resource provides links to a number of recent advertisements made specifically for New Zealand audiences. Some are nostalgic, some are stereotypical, but they all portray a classic slice of New Zealand life.

Tip Top Trumpet - Simplifying Summer

"The greatest edible kiwi icon. Tip Top icecream is endless summers in clear cool water on sandy beaches."

Trumpet is a kiwi icon, which has been a part of New Zealander's lives since its launch in 1964, and is still one of the most popular ice cream brands. Kiwi's love the delicious cone which is coated with chocolate, and the creamy ice cream topped with chocolate and nuts. For those who indulge in Chocolate, Mint or Caramel, there is a delectable gooey sauce to top off this taste sensation.

Lemon and Paeroa – World Famous in New Zealand

It is a brand that we’ve all grown up with – it was the soft drink that we remember drinking in tea rooms on long road trips during the school holidays, the drink that we were allowed on birthdays and special occasions because it wouldn’t stain the carpet, and the drink that Mum packed when we headed off for family BBQs or fish and chips on the beach. And it is this sense of nostalgia and heritage that is now captured in L&P’s advertising – a campaign that celebrates stubbies, mullets and green floral speedos.

Tui

As the legend has it, early in 1889, entrepreneur Henry Wagstaff stopped for a cup of tea at the banks of the Mangatainoka River. He found the water made the finest cuppa he’d ever tasted and decided this would be the ideal place to build a brewery. In that same year he bought land by the river and established Tui Brewery, Mangatainoka.

Despite being loved by the locals Tui remained pretty much a Wairarapa-Hawke’s Bay secret until the 1990s, when Massey University Students adopted Tui as their preferred drop. This led to the expansion firstly through the lower North Island, then through the rest of the country. Today Tui is popular throughout the country with those who like nothing more than to sink a few beers and the chance to take-the-piss with their mates.

Speights

For southerners, Speight's is a badge of belonging. It expresses what makes them feel good about being from the South. For northerners, Speight's represents the South, which is a nostalgic ideal, the last bastion of treasured NZ values of a bygone era.

The "Southern Man" gives the attitudes and characteristics of Speight's a physical form - it is a mystical and aspirational personification of Speight's.

Export Gold

Back in 1957, Dominion Breweries first brewed DB Export as a result of the "Black Budget" imposing extremely high duty on imported premium lagers. DB Export was initially brewed as a 5.4% premium lager and with "Export" in the title to compete with international premium lagers. In 1998 DB Export Gold was rebranded Export Gold to freshen up the brand and better communicate the youthful and energetic brand image.

Export Gold is brewed using only New Zealand's finest malted barley, hops and pure spring water. This golden lager is of moderate strength and is characterise by having a pleasant slightly fruity flavour that is balanced by delicate late hop characters and a crisp clean bitterness in the finish.
