Involvement in sport is like a rite of passage for most New Zealand children. Almost all schools and communities run after-school and weekend sporting activities.
Just which sport depends on the season, with cricket and tennis popular in summer, and soccer and rugby in winter. Most local authority websites also offer contact details to organisations that run sports events for children.
One example is the annual Weet-Bix Tryathlon, open to everyone from eight to 15 years, and supported by Olympic gold medal-winning triathlete Hamish Carter. This nationwide event places emphasis on participation rather than winning – it’s about getting out there, having a go and achieving your personal best.
