Qualifying for Acceptance

Important Notes about the Skilled Migrant Category
Important Notes about the Skilled Migrant Category

This option is for people who are ready to make the move to live permanently in New Zealand. It is available to suitably qualified people who can add value to New Zealand by contributing to an innovative workforce and in turn help our economy achieve sustainable growth.

The Skilled Migrant Category Visa leads to residence. Residence offers a number of benefits to those living in New Zealand, including access to educational and health and retirement benefits not necessarily available to temporary visitors or workers. After five years of permanent residence, you can apply for New Zealand citizenship.

Some tips to consider to speed up your process:

  • If you need a police certificate (US citizens require an F.B.I. check) you may want to start the proceedings while submitting your online Expression of Interest. If you would prefer to print a hard copy and post it to your nearest branch, click here
  • You will also require original documentation, including birth certificates and educational information; again, you may wish to begin gathering these now.
  • Have a high standard of English
You (and everyone else aged 16 or older who is accompanying you) should be able to read, write and speak English to a high standard.

Requirements

Can you say “yes” to the first question and to most of the others?

1.    Are you under 56?

2.    Have you had an offer of skilled employment in New Zealand?

3.    Do you have a tertiary or trade qualification?

4.    Do you have at least two years’ work experience?

If so, it may be worth your time to apply for this category of residence visa.
